IL-17F

Interleukin-17F (IL-17F) is a cytokine belonging to the IL-17 family. Other members of the IL-17 family include IL-17A, IL-17B, IL-17C, IL-17D, and IL-17E/IL-25. IL-17F has 50% sequence homology with IL-17A, the best characterized member of the IL-17 family. IL-17F exists as a biologically active homodimer (IL-17FF) or forms a biologically active heterodimer with IL-17A (IL-17AF). IL-17F induces the expression of proinflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and adhesion molecules by interacting with its receptors, IL-17RA and IL-17RC. This cytokine is also found to inhibit the angiogenesis of endothelial cells and induce endothelial cells to produce IL-2, TGF-b, and MCP-1. Human asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, both associated with IL-17A, have been linked to mutations in the IL-17F gene. IL-17F also modulates inflammation related to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and rheumatoid arthritis.
