Interleukin-12/interleukin-23p40 (IL-12B, cytotoxic lymphocyte maturation factor 40 kDa subunit, CLMF, p40, NK cell stimulatory factor chain 2, NKSF2), is a glycosylated 37.2 kDa protein with five internal disulfide bonds. This cytokine can dimerize with the IL-12A (p35) subunit or the IL-23p19 subunit to form IL-12 and IL-23, respectively. IL-12/IL-23p40 can also dimerize with itself to form the p80 homodimer. It acts as a growth factor for activated T and natural killer (NK) cells and stimulates NK/lymphokine-activated killer cells and IFN-γ production. IL-12/IL-23p40 binds to IL-12Rβ1 that is part of both IL-12 and IL-23 receptor complexes.
