IL-27p28/IL-30

Interleukin-27p28 or Interleukin-30 (IL-27p28/IL-30) is a heterodimeric cytokine complex that is related to the IL-6/IL-12 family of cytokines. IL-27p28 binds with Epstein-Barr virus induced gene 3 (EBI3) to form IL-27, however IL-27p28 has been shown to function independently. The IL-27p28 subunit is produced through the activation of inflammatory cytokines and ligands for Toll-like receptors (TLR) expressed in sentinel cells, such as macrophages and dendritic cells. IL-27p28 is reported to inhibit IL-17 and other proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-6. Studies in animal models indicate that IL-27p28 may inhibit liver toxicity by preventing IFN-γ expression independently of IL-27 or the IL-27 receptor WSX-1. These studies suggest that IL-27p28 is a natural inhibitor of inflammation and may serve as a strong therapeutic candidate in inhibiting liver toxicity.
