Granulocyte macrophage-colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF, CSF2) is a cytokine with pivotal roles in regulating the functions of granulocytes and macrophage lineage populations at all stages of growth and maturation. GM-CSF is secreted by a variety of cell types including T and B cells, macrophages, natural killer (NK) cells, mast cells, fibroblasts, endothelial cells, and adipocytes. GM-CSF is a key player in immune and inflammatory responses. It stimulates Th1, Th2, or Th17 type activity, depending on the presence of other cytokines.
