Nerve Growth Factor (β-NGF, NGF) is a potent neurotrophic factor that supports the growth and survivability of nerve and/or glial cells. The active form of human β-NGF is a disulfide-linked homodimer, formed by two 13.5 kDa polypeptide monomers (238 total amino acids). Three disulfide bonds are required for biological activity. β-NGF is a ligand for both nerve growth factor receptor (NGFR, or p75NTR) and for tropomyosin receptor kinase A (TrkA, or NTRK1). It is a key regulator of nociceptive pain and thus is a target for drug development. β-NGF promotes the survival of neurons and pancreatic beta cells, and has roles in both innate and acquired immune responses. β-NGF is also of interest as a biomarker in prostate cancer research.
