Wnt3a

Wnt3a is a member of the Wingless-type MMTV integration site (Wnt) family of cysteine-rich secreted glycoproteins. Wnt3a signaling occurs through the canonical Wnt/β-catenin pathway by binding to the frizzled (FZD) family of seven transmembrane receptors and the co-receptors, low-density lipoprotein receptor-related receptor 5 and 6 (LRP 5/6). Activation of this pathway results in the stabilization of β-catenin, which subsequently complexes with T-cell factor/lymphoid enhancing factor (TCF/LEF) transcription factors to activate gene transcription. Wnt3 and Wnt3a play distinct roles in cell-cell signaling during morphogenesis of the developing neural tube and aberrant activation of this pathway leads to the formation of a variety of different tumor types.
