Programmed cell death 1 (PD1, CD279, SLEB2, PD-1) is an immune checkpoint receptor that is important in regulating the immune system and its recognition of self. PD-1 is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily and is expressed by both T cells and B cells. Two ligands recognize this receptor, PD-L1 and PD-L2. Binding of either ligand acts to inhibit the immune system response, which reduces autoimmune activity as well as anti-cancer activity. Conversely, inhibitors of this ligand-receptor interaction enhance cancer recognition and fighting activity.
