Osteonectin (ON, OI17, BM-40), also known as secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC), is a calcium-binding glycoprotein in the bone. In addition, Osteonectin shows affinity to both hydroxyapatite and collagen. Osteonection is produced and secreted by osteoblasts during bone formation. Osteonection plays a major role in bone and cartilage mineralization as well as cell matrix interactions. Expression level of osteonection has been associated with certain type of cancers and chronic pancreatitis. Osteonectin has also been linked to human obesity and insulin resistance.
