MMP-9

Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) are a family of endopeptidases which are critically important in extracellular matrix remodeling. They are highly homologous to each other and belong to a larger family of proteases known as the metzincin superfamily. MMP-9 is a glycoprotein that plays a significant role in tissue remodeling, morphogenesis and cytokine activation. It degrades interstitial collagens, proteoglycan core protein, elastin and type IV collagen in the basement membrane. MMP-9 can also cleave several non-matrix molecules such as IL-1b, IL-8, platelet factor-4, GROa, and amyloid b peptide. It is thought that MMP-9 plays an important role in various disease processes, including cancer, rheumatoid arthritis and atherosclerosis.
