Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) are a family of endopeptidases which are critically important in extracellular matrix remodeling. They are highly homologous to each other and belong to a larger family of proteases known as the metzincin superfamily. MMP-2 degrades type IV collagen, which is the major component of basement membranes. MMP-2 is expressed in fibroblasts during development and tissue regeneration. MMP-2 is tightly regulated at the transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels. MMP-2 in coordination with other MMPs, play a role in normal tissue remodeling events such as embryonic development, angiogenesis, ovulation, mammary gland involution and wound healing. MMP-2 has also been associated with the ability of tumors to invade and become neovascularized, and is one of the important targets for the development of antitumor therapeutics.
