HGF

Hepatocyte Growth Factor (HGF, hepatopoietin-A, Scatter Factor, SF) is a potent mitogen for mature parenchymal hepatocytes. It regulates cellular proliferation, cell motility, inhibition of cell growth, and morphogenesis by activating a tyrosine kinase signaling cascade after binding to the proto-oncogenic Met receptor. HGF is secreted by mesenchymal cells and is considered a multi-functional cytokine acting on cells primarily of epithelial origin. HGF plays an essential role in embryonic organ development, angiogenesis, tumorogenesis, tissue regeneration, and wound healing. HGF is secreted as a single inactive polypeptide, cleaved into a 69 kDa alpha-chain and 34 kDa beta-chain, and activated by the formation of a disulfide bond between the alpha and beta chains.
