Fatty Acid Binding Protein 3 (FABP3, heart-type fatty acid-binding protein, H-FABP, mammary-derived growth inhibitor, MDGI) is a member of a family of small (~15kDa) cytosolic proteins that modulate the uptake and intracellular transport of fatty acids. Their distribution and concentration vary widely across tissue types. FABP3 is present at much higher levels in heart tissue than in other tissue types (including skeletal muscle, brain, liver, and small intestine). It is rapidly released into circulation after heart injury, such as myocardial ischemia and necrosis. FABP3 is readily detectable in serum and plasma within as little as one hour after myocardial infarction, peaking in approximately six hours. FABP3 is also stable and present at very low levels in normal serum samples. For these reasons, FABP3 is a promising biomarker for research related to heart damage.
