Cystatin C

Cystatin C (cystatin 3, CST3) is a non-glycosylated proteinase inhibitor and a member of the type 2 cystatin superfamily. Studies have shown that cystatin C is a more precise indicator of kidney damage than traditional clinical markers such as BUN (blood urea nitrogen) or serum creatinine. Evidence supports a strong correlation between elevated blood levels of cystatin C and kidney dysfunction. Cystatin C has been hypothesized to be a more sensitive measure of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) than creatinine clearance.
