The Akt family includes serine/threonine kinases that transmit cellular growth and survival signals in response to growth factors and nutrient availability. Akt inhibits glycogen synthesis by inactivating glycogen synthase kinase 3 alpha and beta and increases glucose uptake, supplying cells with constant energy. Activated Akt upregulates protein synthesis and cell growth. Levels of both total and activated Akt are of significant interest to diabetes and cancer researchers due to its crucial regulatory roles in nutrient availability, cell growth, and cell survival processes.
