Adiponectin is a 30 kD protein that is secreted exclusively by adipocytes. It is thought to play a role in lipid and glucose metabolism. Adiponectin enhances insulin action by activating glucose uptake and fatty acid oxidation. In addition, this adipokine has potent anti-inflammatory and anti-atherosclerotic properties. Adiponectin circulates at high levels (between 2-20 µg/mL) in plasma as trimers, hexamers and high molecular weight multimers. In contrast to most adipokines, plasma adiponectin is often negatively correlated with body mass index (BMI) in humans and rodents. However, expression in various adipose tissues and disease models may vary. This kit provides the assay-specific components for the quantitative determination of adiponectin in human serum and plasma samples.
