Interleukin-29 or Interferon lambda-1 (IL-29/IFN-λ1) is a member of the type III interferon family that are related to IL-10 cytokine family members as well as the type I interferons. The IFN-λ family includes three novel four-helix bundle cytokines: IFN-λ1, IFN-λ2 and IFN-λ3. These three ligands function by signaling through a common heterodimeric receptor composed of CRF2-12 and CRF2-4 chains. IFN-λ1 has been shown to regulate the secretion of TH1 or TH2 cytokines by T-cells. The IFN-λ proteins have been implicated to play a role in viral infections similar to type 1 interferons, and also in cancer and other immune conditions.
