Interferons (IFN) are a family of cytokines that are made and secreted by cells of the immune system in response to viruses, bacteria, parasites, cancer cells or other foreign substances invading the body. IFNs act as an activator of the immune system response to reduce the growth of cancer cells or to eradicate pathogens. There are 3 classes of interferons (IFN-α, INF-β, and IFN-γ) with different as well as overlapping effects. All interferons are antiviral and tumor fighting agents, but they affect the body differently. IFN-αs are produced by macrophages and are used mostly to treat cancers and viral infections. IFN-α2a is an FDA-approved drug for treatment of hairy cell leukemia, AIDS-related Kaposi’s sarcoma, and chronic myelogenous leukemia.
