Description - NHP interleukin 2 receptor alpha (CD25, IDDM10, IMD41, p55; Gene ID: 574300) is one of three proteins that make up the IL-2 receptor, along with IL-2Rβ and IL-2Rγ. They can assemble in different combinations into receptors with varied affinities for IL-2. The alpha subunit does not contribute to the intracellular signaling when IL-2 binds to the receptor; instead, it is recycled to the surface after activation and internalization, while the other subunits are degraded. Levels of free soluble forms of IL-2Rα rise along with increased surface expression, as happens when immune cells are activated. The function of soluble IL-2Rα is unclear.
